Whole-Plant vs Full-Spectrum CBD

Whole-Plant vs Full-Spectrum CBD

A bite size overview of the difference between whole-plant vs full-spectrum CBD and a slight shift in the language around some of our hemp-derived products.

Much of the terminology surrounding hemp and CBD is unique to the industry, resulting in a fairly steep learning curve for newcomers. Take extract names like full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate for example. We’ve also used “whole-plant” to describe our full-spectrum hemp extracts.

With the release of our new USDA Organic Full-Spectrum CBD products, we’ve received a few questions about the changes involved. Here’s a bite-size overview of the difference between whole-plant vs full-spectrum CBD and a slight shift in the language around some of our hemp-derived products.

What is Full-Spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD is a hemp-derived extract that contains the complete chemical profile, or the “full spectrum”, of cannabinoids (including less than 0.3% THC), terpenes, and other natural compounds found in that particular hemp plant. The bulk of these beneficial compounds are found in the flowers or “buds”, however more efficient extraction methods include processing the whole hemp plant.

What is Whole-Plant CBD?

Whole-plant CBD is also a full-spectrum CBD extract. However, it’s named to highlight the processing method involved in its creation. We process the whole hemp plant and use a clean supercritical CO2 extraction method to produce a concentrated “whole-plant” full-spectrum extract.

A Shift in Language: Whole-Plant vs Full-Spectrum

The change on Hemplucid product packaging from “whole-plant” to “full-spectrum” isn’t a change in the type of extract, and is instead a move toward more standard or familiar terminology.

As the industry grows, standardized terminology for hemp-derived products is essential to keep things clear, consistent, and consumer-friendly. Our whole-plant CBD formulations are now primarily referred to as “full-spectrum CBD” for exactly that reason. However, both “full-spectrum” and “whole-plant” can be used interchangeably when describing these products.

Hemplucid USDA Certified Organic Full-Spectrum CBD is extracted from the same premium hemp genetics we’re known for and brings no changes in quality or purity when compared to our previous whole-plant products. You’ll experience the same incredible benefits as always.
