The addition of one single crop into our agriculture has tremendous potential for benefiting the people of this country. Hemp can revitalize a developing world, in ways we have not yet imagined.

 


The cannabis marketplace in the US States which have legalized is worth over $35 billion, and month over month that number continues to climb. The citizens of these States are seeing the benefits of legalization, and even the most skeptical were surprised that any downsides have been tolerable and benign when compared to the pluses. I've had many conversations with non-cannabis-users from legal states who are perfectly satisfied, even excited, with the results of the experiment. The sky did not fall.

1. HEMP ECONOMIC BENEFIT

For years, the city of Denver has been experiencing a shortage of teachers in math, science, and foreign languages. In November 2017, $10 million from the Colorado Marijuana Tax Cash Fund was allocated and used to fill these vacancies, an inspiring move which can only be seen as positive for the children of Denver. Community CBD education will be benefitted because Colorado had the courage and foresight to expand their hemp economy, and now they are using surplus monies to address perennial social problems.

 

Legal cannabis has many components which are undeniably helpful for communities. Grown on a wide-scale, hemp could potentially fulfill the promise of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution, and everlastingly "promote the general welfare".

2. Democratic Hemp Value

Currently, cannabis prohibition centralizes economic power in a way that only privileges a few large industries-- including industries which, in some cases, are known to be negatively impactful to the planet and linked to public health crises.

 

There are many types of companies with a vested interest in perpetuating cannabis prohibition despite public opinion. This unfair, misguided privileging of unsustainable or unjust practices is nearly 100 years old, having been enacted step-by-step in the 1920's and 30's, and blindly followed ever since.

Arresting people for the personal consumption of plants is not the formula for a humane society-- it is not justice. American families, and indeed whole communities across the country, have been negatively impacted by cannabis prohibition. The reality is that wherever you sit right now, you could throw a rock and hit something more dangerous for your health than cannabis.

5. Hemp is a source for healthyFOOD

Hemp is the only plant in existence which can feed you, clothe you, house you, and heal you. Furthermore, it is perfectly safe, with no real side effects. Even non-controversial foods like peanuts, red meat, breath mints, and apples are worse for your health than hemp, (or at least not as healthy.)

Hemp hearts, hemp leaves, and hemp seeds are some of the healthiest known foods.

6. Hemp as a HABITAT PRESERVATION

It only takes 3-4 months for a hemp plant to grow to harvest. Using it everywhere we can, the hemp crop could significantly decrease the amount of deforestation which is taking place around the world, destroying habitat, and threatening the natural balance of the global ecosystem. Hemp displays powerful uptake capability for radioactive materials and heavy metals: it is useful in bioremediation projects, even as a soil-restorative agent to clean up the waste site at Chernobyl. Superfund sites around the United States would surely be benefitted. There are currently more than 1,300 Superfund sites in this country.

8. Hemp Protects agains SOIL EROSION

Hemp as a rotation crop is a soil-corrector, meaning this easy-to-grow plant adds nitrogen back into the soil and increases viability. Topsoil degradation is one of the largest issues facing the future of American farming. The intelligence of utilizing cycle crops instead of nutrient-depleting mono-crop agriculture is a no-brainer. Our national commitment to sustainable farming and food systems ought to be a matter of implementing the very best practices. By virtue of ignoring hemp and other rotation crops, our current model imposes widespread unsustainability. Vast swaths of corn and soy endlessly planted will deplete the soil over time, threatening the fortunes and futures of America's Heartland. Work hemp into the existing system.

If voters in this country were provided further education regarding the many potential uses of hemp and the general welfare which it irrefutably represents, my guess is that nearly 100% of voters would be in favor planting hemp far and wide. Embracing a tremendously beneficial, non-psychoactive, prosperity-creating plant might be part and parcel of a strategy to "secure the blessings of liberty".

The first U.S. president, George Washington, was a hemp farmer. The very first American flag was handsewn hemp by Betsy Ross. The first drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp by Thomas Jefferson, another hemp farmer. Thomas Paine wrote about hemp in Common Sense. The sails, ropes, and rigging of the Mayflower were made out of hemp. The majestic hemp plant was fundamental to the development of these United States. We anticipate the day that "old glory" will fly once again, as a beacon of hope and benefit and healing spread from sea to shining sea.
